This is for the teachers who dress up on Halloween.

The ones who scour dollar stores for wigs and face paint, and persuade colleagues to dress up as their favorite superhero, too. And especially the ones who stay in character: The Queen Elizabeths who spend the whole day knighting. The Michael Jacksons who spend the whole day moonwalking. And the Barack Obamas who spend the whole day convincing Americans that the arc of the moral universe really does bend towards justice.

These are the people who know that students spend too many days getting exactly what they expect when they walk in the door. And that a bit of laughter is the spoon full of sugar that helps learning gracefully transpire. And that one thing that makes groups into communities is that they celebrate occasions together.

Schools become communities because of you.
