Adina Schecter

Adina Schecter is a Cohort 2 BTR graduate and current mentor in ELA at Charlestown High School, where she also did her residency. Along with Kati Reinke Delahanty, Adina is presently a mentor of Cohort 7 Teacher Resident Sonya Crocker.
Adina is very active in the BTR alumni community and often serves as a BTR advocate, speaking about her experiences as a Resident, graduate, and mentor at local and national education events. Her past work tutoring adult learners at the Literacy Volunteers of America and as an assistant teacher at King Open School in Cambridge led her to join BTR as an ELA Resident.
Inspiration to teach:
Before teaching, I was working in low-level jobs in magazine publishing, trying to work my way up to being an editor for left-wing publications like The Nation and The Village Voice in New York City. I craved for more community, more accountability to be an active part of social change, and was inspired to have the classroom be the venue through which I would serve as a change agent.
About my students:
My students are at a major turning point in their lives. They are overage, off-track academically, and many of them have repeated at least a year of high school. We are starting a new program at Charlestown called Diploma Plus where we will reengage them in school through increased academic and social support, a sharp focus on future goals, and innovative instructional practices and assessments that are competency-based.
About BTR:
There is no greater mission in urban education than that of BTR. Supporting new teachers through their first few years in a demanding and often too isolating profession will be the primary factor that affects student achievement. As a former Resident and current mentor, BTR grounds me in my values about this work. My connection to it over the years is a guiding force in remembering why I teach and how important it is for me to be part of supporting new teachers.
Favorite Thing in the World To Do:
Dive fearlessly into the ocean.
Random thought:
If I had to eat only apples or oranges for the rest of my life, I would definitely choose apples.

I currently teach in a multi-age, multi-level alternative high school program, but my first step in a classroom (as an adult) was seven years ago in a fifth- and sixth-grade classroom in Cambridge. My mentor teacher worried about her students all the time. She… [more]
