Sonya Crocker

Sonya Crocker is a Cohort 7 BTR Graduate. She completed her residency year in ELA under the guidance of BTR graduate mentors Adina Schecter and Kati Delahanty.
Initially focused on becoming a psychologist, Sonya interned as a full-time teacher with the San Francisco Breakthrough Collaborative and had a realization - that her love of psychology would translate well to teaching. Her interests in memory, culture, motivation, social issues and character development are influencing her experience in the teaching and learning process of the residency year.
Inspiration to teach:
I became interested in teaching when I worked as a Peer Academic Coach at the University of Texas at Austin in which I mentored students in a variety of academic skills and strategies. The one-on-one time I spent with struggling university students energized and inspired me. It was rewarding to see students gain confidence in their abilities as learners as well as to build relationships over the semester. I look forward to building productive and meaningful relationships with students at Charlestown and guiding them as they become critical thinkers, writers, and learners.
About my students:
I love getting to know them and learning what motivates them about school and life!
About BTR:
BTR has been the ideal route for me to take as I prepare to become a teacher. As a result of my graduate courses, I now have background information about the environments my students grew up and live in. I also have a better understanding of how my own background influences my perspective as a teacher. My mentors, Adina and Kati, have taught me so much!
Favorite Thing in the World To Do:
Eat and LAUGH!
Random thought:
Dark chocolate and Michael Jackson please!
